Guerlain Exclusive Fragrance Experience with Marie Line Patry

Guerlain is introducing a new in-store event that aims to give customers an
unexpected way of interacting with fragrance.

Guerlain Exclusive Fragrance Experience with Marie Line Patry

Guerlain’s history as a perfumer is legendary, having created exquisite fragrances without interruption for more than 180 years. With nearly 800 compositions to its name, Guerlain is justly proud of its unsurpassed olfactory heritage, a rare collection representing the epitome of excellence, luxury and sophistication.
Beginning this fall, Guerlain will offer customers a brand new way to experience this unique heritage and fragrance expertise. National Fragrance and Beauty Director, Marie Line Patry, will host exclusive Fragrance Experience events in stores, debuting a luxurious, bespoke Guerlain trunk that houses a complete fragrance experience within its walls.
The fragrance trunk is a multi-sensorial tool that will help bring to life each of the main pillars within Guerlain’s Exclusive Fragrance Collection. Marie Line can now take every customer on a journey to La Maison Guerlain at 68 Champs Elysées, through the brand’s history and deep into the legacy of craftsmanship and know-how that sets Guerlain apart from all other fragrance houses. The experience includes videos, music and elements that illustrate the perfumer’s inspiration for each of the creations. As each drawer is opened the customer is able to uncover an exceptional 360° view of the fragrance collection inside. At over five feet tall, it is a theatrical experience designed to heighten the senses and enhance the emotions we feel when we encounter a new fragrance.
Marie Line Patry has an unparalleled ability to guide customers toward finding their perfect scent by using a thorough approach that involves learning about specific aspects of a person’s life in order to make this connection. Her approach matches a customer with a scent that both reflects and enhances their personality.
Guerlain’s fragrance history includes many pioneering firsts: the first modern fragrance with Jicky, the first oriental fragrance with Shalimar and now this unprecedented in-store experience with the Exclusive Fragrance Experience.

Guerlain Shalimar Fourreau du Soir & Habit Rouge Habit de Cuir: new fragrance editions

In a move that recalls Serge Lutens (and his own Fourreau Noir), Guerlain is issuing another "version" of the mythical Shalimar creation from 1925, right after they issued an introductory flanker with their Shalimar Parfum Initial; it's now time for  Shalimar Fourreau du Soir. (pronounced Foo-roh dee swahr, "evening seath/ evening dress") According to Guerlain: "This stunning one time edition makes wearing Shalimar even more irresisitable. The lace print and the leather butterfly are both features from the roaring twenties, the era of Shalimar".The inspiration comes from a true story: Madame Guerlain wearing an evening dress in lace abord the liner Normandie and an unforgettable perfume that stirred the senses and made everyone hanker after the new scent: Shalimar.
The new perfume edition is targeting the Christmas gifts market and will launch October 2011.

Men will not remain uncatered for, in the realm of Guerlain limited editions for Christmas gift giving. The classic Habit Rouge (in many ways the men's Shalimar) will be encased in a robe of leather (habit de cuir), as depicted.
Habit Rouge Habit de Cuir is also launching in October 2011.

Nota bene: Both fragrances inside remain the same as currently circulating (in the case of Shalimar that means the recently reformulated juice).

"Art As Scent: Jicky, Chanel No 5, Santal Massoïa": A Talk

Chandler Burr, Curator of the Department of Olfactory Art at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, former New York Times perfume critic, and author of two definitive non-fiction books about the perfume industry ~among many others, gave a talk on September 23rd at TEDx in Budapest re: his fundamental approach on “Scent As Art”. You can watch it on this TEX Danubia link or in the video embedded below (You will catch some fascinating insights into the newest Hermès Santal Massoia we announced on these pages a while ago).

He illustrates the approach by analysing three fragrances from different eras (NB.descriptors below are his):

- “Jicky” (1889) Aimé Guerlain
From the Collection of Guerlain
The paradigmatic work of turn-of-the-century French Neoclassic/Romanticism.

- “Chanel No 5” (1921) Ernest Beaux
From the Collection of Chanel
The first and greatest work of olfactory Modernism.

- “Santal Massoïa” (2011) Jean-Claude Ellena
From the Collection of Hermès
Ellena’s latest piece done in the school he leads, a work of Neo-Minimalism/ Luminism.

His talk however isn't exclusive of other classics and moderns: He includes a discussion on Germaine Cellier's work and her Fracas icon from 1948, Odeur 53 by Anne-Sophie Chapuis and Martine Pallix (1998) as a continuation of Brutalism, Untitled commissioned by Margiela (a 2010 Surrealist/ Neo-Brutalist work by perfumer Daniela Andrier), Edmond Roudnitska's 1949 Diorama as a consummate work of Abstract Expressionism and Francis Fabron's L'Interdit from 1958, bridging Classicism and Abstract Expressionism.

Laura Ashley Fragrances: The Return of Romance

According to Basenotes (find the links of the new perfumes therein), Laura Ashley, the legendary home decor and fashions/textiles brand, has returned to perfumery: The company have worked with Azzi Glasser and CPL Aromas to create three new Laura Ashley fragrances: Green Meadow, Pink Petals and Floral Heart, presented in 50ml and 100ml of Eau de Parfum, with the option of a collective 3-piece of 30ml each as well.
Mum's the word on whether they will ever bring back such legendaries as Laura Ashley #1 and Dilys though!
