Maximizing Your Fragrance's Use: Perfume Application Tips from Jean Claude Ellena & Francis Kurkdjian

The way of applying fragrance for maximum appreciation and enjoyment is a fine art. If you're a beginner, you might want to consult Perfume Shrine's full article on how and where to apply perfume more effectively to make it last longer and enjoy it more. Today I want to share with you a few professional tips I have come across during my readings from top perfumers Jean Claude Ellena and Francis Kurkdjian, first appearing in French Vogue.
I'm sharing this advice with you here, translated by me from the French, for your delectation and should you wish to add or comment on any of them via your personal experience, you're very welcome to do so.

On traveling:

When traveling, bring a box of incense paper (Papier d'Armenie) in your luggage to perfume your clothes. And at night in your hotel room, spray some Eau de Cologne on your pillow. A smell that relaxes and comforts. " (Francis Kurkdjian)

On leaving a fragrant trail:

"To leave behind a sensual trail that lasts all day, nothing better than dabbing perfume directly with your fingers leaving the spray aside. You lose a bit of material that way, but the skin is impregnated better." (Jean Claude Ellena)

On entertaining:

"In the summer, for lunches and dinners with friends, scent the guest towels with rose water mixed with a little lemon juice to give a prolonged fresh feeling throughout the meal." (Francis Kurkdjian)

On where best to apply perfume on the body:

"Above all, never wear perfume at the wrist as jewelry and watches alter the scent. The ideal is to spray the crook of the elbow or on the neck: the fragrance then diffuses to its maximum potential". (Jean Claude Ellena)

I like that these all emphasise the sensual enjoyment of scent: it's not how to make the bottle last longer but how to envelop oneself within one's chosen perfumes.

  2. Those are some good advice. :) Thank you for sharing them.
I especially like the one for traveling and guests.

I asked recently about the places people put perfume and was amazed at some of the answers. I ended up practicing some of them - especially the one where I not apply only to the sides of my neck but back as well.
I think that makes for a perfect perfume circle around me. ;)

    What a delightful piece...Thank you.

I like to apply perfume to the sides of my neck, nape of my neck, back of my forearms, and ankles.

I like so many iris scents! But I suppose my most favourite is Chanel 31 Rue Cambon, because is different from the others I have - it's not gourmand, it's very refined and elegant. It's me :-)

I would just like to agree with EvaK. 31 Rue Cambon...it smells expensive and sophisticated, I love it too

Ouch! I have to say that the idea of perfume inside the elbows does not appeal, as in the past I have had dermatitis-like rashes there, exacerbated by the warm moist environment. Perhaps I should try it in winter. I agree about keeping perfume clear of your watch though.

Thank you for sharing,I really enjoyed that!Since I don't wear watches or bracelets,I like to apply on the wrist, because it makes constant sniffing easier and less obvious than putting your nose to your elbow!

  10. ines,

nape (back of the neck) makes a perfect spot because if you have short hair it is wafting directly and if you have longer hair it get picked up and is perceived by every move of the hair (very sensual).
It's also quite subtle because we see people from the front so it's not as "loud" as putting it on our chest or front of neck. ;-)

you sound like a very fragrant person, how lovely to put it on your ankles, a forgotten spot!

  13. Eva,

you might have intended this to be on the Iris Nobile post. I have counted your vote as valid.
And yes, I agree with your choice of perfume!!

  14. Oystersandchampagne,

it does smell sophisticated, doesn't it? It's also so abstract. A peppery thing that isn't culinary and isn't "perfume-y" straight on. Nice work by Chanel.

  15. AMC,

there are exceptions to every "rule"! ;-)

Sorry about the rash. I have had a couple of rashes from iris frags (specifically SL and MPG); I now use on clothes.

  16. Ariane,

of course there's no need to follow religiously what these perfumers suggest, I just thought it makes for good reading (and possibly ideas to adopt as suited).
Personally I prefer the upper side of my lower arm; just as easy (and casual) to sniff and the minuscule fuzz retains scent very well indeed!

  17. I like to spray perfume on the keypoints. Wrist, elbow, ankles, back of knees, between breast and also like to spray a mist in the air and walk through it. Of course i mainly do this with mist sprays. But want to make sure throughout the day I'm getting a hint of the fragrance.
