Marilyn Monroe's Favorite Perfumes for her (would be) 89th Birthday Today

via Getty Images/Michael Ochs Archives
Today would have been Marilyn Monroe's 89th birthday, had she been alive and kicking and demystifying her perennial legend. Famous for her sweet-sexy glamour puss image and her Monroeisms, the not-quite--dumb-blonde, though she often played one on screen, had her beauty routine down pat; from Erno Laszlo skincare and Elizabeth Arden eyeliner pencils in black and brown to her Glorene of Hollywood falsies, pages upon pages are written on it.

Naturally we decided to dedicate ourselves to her perfumes. We've skimmed the surface before, but this is more in depth.

Here is the full slideshow with rarely seen pictures of Marilyn on Fragrance.About.com. Enjoy!

    1. My exact quote is "more in depth" (than merely mentioning names, which is the usual course in such "famous patrons of X perfume" mentions). There is documentation and some explaining on why she must have chosen them, plus info on the scents themselves (of course a bit more basic since the site isn't addressed to the hardcore perfumephile who knows everything). The actual slideshow contains more than 2 slides, in fact there is an introduction with some of her favorite beauty products too (as weaned from circumstantial evidence from the LA police crime investigation photos of her nightstand and the Christie's auction of some of her possessions some years ago). Just checked the article and it shows for me in full: intro slide and 5 more. Excepting a tech glitch, it should be visible to all?

Oh sorry, I saw all of what you outline in your comment here. I think I misunderstood and expected something else.

Ah - but which scent did she wear when reading Joyce's Ulysses?

    1. This is info that would be interesting to imagine, as there is no conclusive evidence on what it was. If Floris was indeed bought at the time it is suggested by the receipt to be bought, then it might have been it. But it's non conclusive.

    2. Adding that it's probably a good mental exercise to imagine what, since I personally never finished Joyce's Ulysses (and mean to for some time now). It might help!

I have, once, it's more that my husband is on a Joyce kick, so I have been hearing soooooo much about it at the moment. There's a LOT of stuff out there online re reading Ulysses (& Finnegan's Wake, amazingly), if you are curious (I could even ask for suggested links).

    1. I bet!!

Curiously enough I was first interested in Finnegan's Wake (and only later in Ulysses), just because Umberto Eco references it so often in his own seminal work on literature semiotics.

Ulysses (at least) actually pays a lot of attention to smells - just not always nice ones. Joyce also has Bloom buy a lemon scented soap (for himself) that thanks to the wonders of the interweb, one can still buy from the same pharmacy...

  5. I love so much Marilyn.... I know she wore Chanel n 5, but also Arpège from Lanvin, and Joy Patou, English lavender Yardley and Rose géranium from Floris, she gave to a friend Nuit de noel from Caron.... Do you lno what other perfume she could have worn? Thank you🙏❤️❤️I also know her fave flowers were roses from any colors, delphinium, poinsettias, red and white anthuriims, but I believe she loved carnations.... Pinks... And daisies.... Do you have any further info on that? 💜Also it is said she loved a perfume from Elizabeth arden... Could it be blue grass in your opinion? Thank you
