Reveling in Hay

Today is probably the first cool day of autumn. Not exactly cool, mind you, we're under partially sunny skies and it's just crisp in the morning and evening, but warm at noon, but you know what that means for a perfumista; sorting out the winter wardrobe of fragrances, making room at the front of the perfume closet for the cozier, warmer, sexier scents to rotate when the mood strikes for a little mulled wine in the evening to replace the chilled sangria and a light mohair cardigan over the summery strappy tops.

So what did I choose, perfume-wise? Chergui by Serge Lutens. A fragrance steeped in the warm brushstrokes of hay absolute; mollifying the ennui of daily chores, caressing instead of highly stung, reassuring, comforting like a pair of trusty flannel slippers after a long walk home in stiff stilettos, or a roll in the hay with someone you know since childhood.

Hay is a glorious aroma in a fragrance and I'd love to hear your favorite perfumes with a hay note in the comments. Let's get inspired for the cooler season ahead!

  1. I love the hay notes in L'Artisan Fleur de Narcisse, it has a very haybarn note and in Parfums Nicolai Vie de Chateau, which is much softer and sweeter.

  4. in Spain there's a soap, manufactured since 1905, that smells like freshly cut hay. The name of the soap (also available as shower gel) is Heno de Pravia (Hay from Pravia) and it's very popular. Pravia, by the way, it's a beautiful village of Asturias (Northern Spain)

  5. Vie de Chateau by Parfums de Nicolai. It's the perfect early fall scent.

I have always loved that photo, but can't help but think that it must have been terribly itchy & uncomfortable to pose for :)

  7. pg bois blond - my perfect hay perfume. however, i find it slightly better suited as a summer frag but could go well during a warm, indian summer type autumn as well.

  8. K,

oh love Fleur de Narcisse, had reviewed it ages ago. It's a great one! Never thught of Vie de Chateau as hay, though I like it a lot (that sort of aromatic, chyprish, mossy masculine is so appealing to me), though you're right of course. Thanks!!

  10. M,

I let this one slip, though I like it very much, and opted for the Iris Pallida. Now that they discontinued that, I don't feel so intent on feeling guilty on the expense.

  11. MJ,

indeed, that's a great reference! Thanks for mentioning it. I had seen it in Spain and bypassed it. How ignorant of me!! I should grab some on Ebay.

  12. Rosarita,

Vie de Chateau is very very fetching, can't argue with you!

And yeah, must have been itchy, hadn't really thought of it, I was so distracted by Jane's boobs and pose (she was famous for them, wasn't she)

  13. M,

we got you going!! Fleur de Narcisse is a good one. Very fitted to gardeners, it has this great earthy scent about it.

  14. Danny,

I need to reacquaint myself with that one. For some reason, I find PG scents to be criminally under-discussed. (Love Coze btw, need to review it)

i don't know if "bottega veneta" actually possesses a hay note, but it certainly develops a strong one on my skin! i love it :)

I love the vintage feel of CARON Montaigne. As it dries down, it smells of a haystack in the hot afternoon sun shine ...

Fougere Bengale is the ultimate hay perfume for me. Skumberhouse Sove has also a beautiful hay note. And from Serge Lutens I turn to Fumerie Turque for a hay fix.

For me,it is Wrapings(Clinique) that smells like hay.Not fresh cut,but dry.To my nose,it is the same austere scent.Lovely!

  19. I enjoy the interplay of the hay note with bitter orange in Frederic Malle's Bigarade Concentree. Also as Memory of Scent mentioned several of Slumberhouse's pefumes feature a prominent hay note including Sova and one of my favorites Baque.I also get a nice straw/hay note in CB I hate perfume's Smoky Tobacco and a mossy hay note in Hermes Terre de Hermes pure parfum

I love the hay notes in Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan. It really adds an extra depth to the scent. Also, combined with the other tea and osmanthe notes, they form such an air of "lightness" that is so delightful.

  22. I strongly second PG Bois Blond! and also find it well-suited to summer, when I'm enjoying a lazy, hazy afternoon or when I'm longing for fall and cooler weather. Chergui doesn't agree with me even though I love it on others *sad*
