Revisiting the Neglected: Shop Your Fragrance Wardrobe

The notion of "shopping your wardrobe" is hot on fashion and style blogs right now. The idea of a judged frugality has something appealing to it. Like controlling someone's life, an illusion of being in control at the very least. It also makes for worthwhile discoveries at the back of the pile; that rah-rah skirt from high school can't be worn again, but looks at those leggings from the early 1990s! And the perfectly cut jean jackets from the same period, not laser-cut but just as straight and lean? (Lean and long was big in the 1990s, my friends).

The same principle can be applied to one's fragrance wardrobe. Imagine if we dived at the back of our wardrobes and fished the fragrances we wear little of. With huge collections for the majority of us, the loot should be highly stimulating. Thus began the "Shop Your Fragrance Wardrobe" idea!

I unearthed something truly gorgeous which I had not been wearing for a long, long time. The reasons? I'm not exactly rewriting Das Kapital, but I do breach a bit on it, in a way. Find the article on this link and please share your own neglected fragrances which you recently rediscovered in the comments.

  2. Elena!
I am totally shopping my fragrance wardrobe. I have stuff in storage that I've forgotten about for thirty years - or more! I am currently revisiting the very first Hypnotic Poison, an almost ancient Sirocco perfume by Lucien Lelong and an Emeraude extract from the 30s, all still in good shape. What fun!

    1. It CAN be fun, yes! Glad it's taken in the spirit I wrote it. Finding something forgotten and then wearing it and feeling all the positive feelings it first provoked into making you acquire it. Sirocco has a great packaging style too, from what I recall. Enjoy!

  3. Oh I really love that Hermes ad ..... so pretty and the scarf looks like a butterfly's wings!
Yes Helg ....I have been to the back of the dark cupboard and I am wearing Botrytis by Ginestet ... its a EDT but it behaves like a EDP!! Our weather is like autumn at the moment so its lovely in the not too hot or cold days plus - bottle lovers will love this one - so elegant with the grapes etched on the glass and that gold grape leaf sitting right on the top of the lid!

    1. Those ads are a string of my favorite ads in the entire universe. They perfectly conveyed the beauty of the craftsmanship with the durability and the timelessness that the ancient olive tree symbolizes. Perfect! (Motto was "Le temps avant soi" i.e. Time before you)

Botytris is one of the sweeter, honeyed perfumes which I genuinely like. Great for autumnal weather!

  4. My lifestyle means I move every couple of years. On average, I live in one place no more than 2-3 years. On top of that, I HATE owning things I don't wear/use. Seems a waste of space to me. So...if I find I no longer wear something, including fragrance, I ponder on the why. Then I wear it for a day to test it, and if I realize there is no real joy there, I sell it. I also don't like a huge collection. I buy a lot of bottles to test sniff and then resell them. I don't like samples or decants...I NEED the full bottle experience. BUT, when my collection gets to be more than 25 bottles or so, I cull the herd. I am the same way with clothing, shoes...everything really. At my age, I have come to realize that I can only truly LOVE-LOVE a finite number of things (not people, just things😀). I also know that there will always be newer, prettier, shinier things around the corner, so I don't fixate so much on the newest, latest releases anymore. My fragrance collection today, looks completely different than it did last year at this time. My only constants are my Chanels. Those I buy over and over...all else is completely fluid. This year I did fall hard for L'orpheline (based on your recommendation...thank you!) I will buy another bottle, soon and that will be in my stash for some time yet. The rest? Who knows!!

    1. So glad that L'orpheline has worked that well for you!! It's very easy to like, once one has an affinity for musks and woods. Isn't it? Very versatile too.

Got to love your wisdom in recognizing things as something that passes and that there are only as much that one can love love love. Wish I weren't a hoarder myself! :/

      Have fun!

  5. I do not have a collection to speak of, so I use all my perfumes regularly.

    1. That's a good practice. Reducing everything down to 20 ADORED bottles should be my goal. ;)

    2. Well, I do want more bottles. Salome will be next. ;)
