My favorite Mother's Day surprise is a memory that will stick with me forever. I gave my mother one dozen long-stemmed, red roses. My mother loves red roses and she loved the bouquet so much that she still has one of the roses that is dried and preserved that she keeps.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite mothers day surprise was when I showed up at my parents house last year to cook my mom breakfast. I had to go to work later (as always!) But I bought flowers and cake and wine (so she could enjoy later) and we all had breakfast. It wasn't much but I did what I could and I could tell she appreciated it.
ReplyDeletethank you ladies for the giveaway! : )
My favorite gift to give my mother was a coupon to plant some roses in the backyard, perhaps because it was her favorite gift!
ReplyDeleteIf I told you about my favorite Mother's Day surprise, I could run the risk of being arrested. In a couple of years I may be allowed to relate it! Happy Mother's Day to s the wonderful Moms who help to keep our crazy planet a little more safe and sane!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite Mother's Day Surprise... When my then six year old daughter presented her great grandmother, grandmother, godmother, and myself with hand drawn/written invitations to dinner at her favorite restaurant, D. B. Kaplan's in the Watertower Place on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. She not only ordered for us, but she paid the bill with all the money from her piggy bank. And no her daddy didn't help her with any of the surprise. He was just as shocked as we were!

ReplyDeleteMy Favorite Mother's Day Surprise!
When I first moved to AZ 25 years ago, I sent my Mother an airline ticket to visit me in Scottsdale, AZ. I told her we were going on an adventure for Mother's Day and she would need to go along with my itinerary.
Mother had spoken often about when she lived in Palm Desert, in her 20's, and how much she enjoyed the nightlife. Since she did not travel much in her life, and it had been so many years since she had taken a vacation, I wanted to plan a fabulous weekend in Palm Desert for her! It was so much fun planning our itinerary. We stayed at the Hilton and she was in awe. As we drove around, she was amazed by how much the city had grown and changed through the years. My boyfriend went with us, and he took her and I shopping. While we were shopping, Mother discovered a beautiful, elegant fragrance called Jean Claude Jitrois that was simply incredible, and was being discontinued. John was so sweet and bought her and I several bottles.
We ate at fabulous restaurants and while dining; men would pass our table and stop. They would back up and ask who smelled so beautiful and what was the name of the fragrance. We discovered it was my Mother and she was wearing the new perfume! One man said he loved it so much that he wanted to buy it for his wife immediately. I teased my Mother and suggested she was putting on too much. She didn’t feel that she was and insisted it was just a beautiful smelling perfume and she had good taste in perfumes. Needless to say, it became her signature perfume to wear. I think she enjoyed all the attention she received from men while wearing that perfume too! Lol…
We got home and my Mother told both John and I how much fun she had, and appreciated her Mother’s Day weekend. She raved to her friends about her weekend and finding her new scent and told the stories of men stopping to sniff her out of the crowd.
My Mother passed on a few years later and still had a couple bottles of perfume left, which I was lucky to add to my own collection of favorites. My Mother’s favorite perfume was now all mine. I wore the perfume for special occasions only, always thinking of her and the special bond we had.
I eventually ran out of her perfume. I remember it was so difficult to use up that last bottle! I just wanted to hold on to both the perfume and my memory of her scent forever.
My Mother was SPECIAL and I miss her so much! She was known by her friends to be a good and kind person. I will never forget how much fun we had that Mother’s Day weekend in Palm Springs. I remember it, like it was yesterday.
Happy Mother's Day, Mom! I love you!
My favorite Mother's Day surprise happened years ago when my older daughter and her sister had invited me over for a wonderful home-cooked brunch at the older one's home. Our family always celebrated Mother's Day a week late so that it could be combined with my birthday which falls on May 16th. We all arrived and were having fun snapping pictures of my oldest who was very pregnant and her seven year old daughter while the breakfast finished cooking. What we didn't know at the time was that before we could eat a bite of this wonderful breakfast, my older daughter's water would break and she would go off to hospital to give birth to another daughter who was born only minutes before the following day - my birthday! The rest of us stayed at her house to enjoy a lovely breakfast and take lots of pictures to share later at the hospital.
ReplyDeleteIt was the beginning of an amazing year for all of us with two new babies born because what we didn't know that day when my second granddaughter arrived was that my younger daughter would have a baby boy the following February. The following Mother's Day was 'the best' because all of us were now mothers and I was grandmother to three beautiful grand-children. The two youngest grand-kids have both become teens in the last year and the oldest is startling the world with her beauty and brains in her second year of university. All three will be heading to London with for a week's vacation after we celebrate Mother's Day this coming Sunday.
But what is the perfume angle to this story you ask? A couple of years ago my birthday present was the joy of taking my two daughters and my two grand-daughters to the fabulous Perfume Shoppe that we are so lucky to have in Vancouver, BC, Canada so that its proprietor, the wondrous lady Naz, could help all four chose the perfumes that would become their 'signature scents'.
Happy Mother's Day, all!

My favorite Mother's Day surprise was when my kids were about seven they cooked me pancakes and brought them to me in bed. They had a tray wtih a small vase and a rose. The plate was bautifully arranged. They had used the best dishes and sterling silver. All the details were perfect! The pancakes were not the greatest ever, to be honest, but their three shining faces and smiles when they brought in their surprise was the best gift of all.
ReplyDeleteWhen my Mother was alive I flew to Florida to surprise her for Mother's Day. Seeing how elated she was gave me such infinite pleasure. I thought it couldn't get better...but when she said "For us, every day is Mother's Day," that just validated the depth of our relationship and something I never forgot. So if those of you are still lucky enough to have a Mother, appreciate that special gift while you can.
ReplyDeleteI got married on Mother's Day weekend and my parents didn't know until they arrived. My mom thought it was just a regular Mom's Day and suddenly the judge appeared, a cake was whisked out of hiding and I walked down the stairs in a pale pink dress with jewelry from my mom and my grandmother on. It was a huge surprise for her and she was so happy! Now we laugh when the holiday arrives and she jokes my husband can't forget our anniversary!
ReplyDeleteYears ago my very young son surprised me on Mother's Day. He went to his little sister's bedroom and returned with her box of plastic hair barrettes. He asked me to sit down at the bottom of the stairs. Then he called his sister and told her it was "time to do Mommy's hair." He told me to hold very still. He and his sister sat on the stairs behind me. They put at least 40 barrettes in my hair, then my son patted my cheeks with his little hands, gave me a hug, and said, "You are beautiful, Mommy." I still have that box of barrettes. :)
ReplyDeleteI am from Arizona and have a 26 year old son. I moved to New Jersey 9 years ago to remarry and miss my only child every day. I cannot visit as often as I would like due to my work. My son works alot as well, and we only see each other a handful of times a year, although we speak on the telephone every day. My heart breaks every holiday, especially Mother's Day when I see my friends spending time with their families and I am at home missing my son so much. My favorite Mother's Day was several years ago. The morning of Mother's Day my son called to tell me to look behind a picture for a note. When I lifted the picture there was a card taped to the wall. Upon opening the card there was a riddle that I had to answer which directed me to another card inside a piano bench. This "Mother's Day Treasure Hunt" went on and on until the last note directed me to look under our pool table. Taped to the bottom of the pool table was a 2x3 Mother's Day card that my son had hidden for me when he was visiting the previous Christmas. The thought and time that Aaron took in December to surprise me in May is a memory that I will never forget!
ReplyDeleteMy best Mother's Day moment came in 1991. I was deployed during Operation Desert Shield in 1990. My orders were for me to be gone 180 days. My duty station was Presidio San Francisco and deployed to Dhaharan. I flew my wife and kids to be home in Ogden, Utah while I was gone. I was supposed to be home by April when I got extended to stay an additional 90 days. I then got a surprise change of orders to fly home on May 5th. Well, I flew into SFO on May 7th and two days later got on another plane home to Salt Lake City, all without telling my wife or parents I was coming home. Needless to say, I got to spend that Mother's day with my mom and wife. They were very surprised I came home and it was the best memory of Mother's day for me. I really consider Mother's day to be every day of the year, as Mothers are the very best.
ReplyDeleteMany Mother's Day memories. One very happy one was shared with my best friend Linda and our mothers in Virginia. I spent as much time at her house as my own and loved her mom dearly. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress and made me a outfit every time she made one for Linda. My mother was a super cook also and always sent Linda home loaded with canned pickles, preserves, garden produce, etc. to share with her Mother. Through all this the mother's had never met in person so we decided to surprise them with a big day out on Mother's Day. I told my mother I was taking her out to eat and met Linda and her mother in the parking lot where we transferred to one car for their big day. We drove out of town to the river for a big seafood dinner, both their favorites and on to Colonial Williamsburg for some history. The best part of it was the time they got to share together finding out they had so much in common. Linda's mother passed away suddenly not very soon after this, my mother many years later but we still have this beautiful memory of a beautiful day all together.
ReplyDeletemy favorite mother's day memory happens every year, when i am reminded how fortunate i am to have the most wonderful, caring, amazing daughter in the whole wide world. i am the luckiest mom on the planet, as far as i can tell!
ReplyDeleteI have to start by saying that I was not fortunate enough to have children of my own so Mother's Day has always been a bittersweet holiday for me. However, I have been a mother to my two dogs, Max and Skipper.
ReplyDeleteThree years ago, for Mother's Day, Max and Skipper surprised me with a card and flowers for Mother's Day. Of course we all know my husband was behind it! I was so surprised and touched that it brought me to tears. I had never had the blessing of receiving any acknowledgement or gift for Mother's Day before. In addition, that year my mother and two sisters all sent me Mother's Day cards.
This year will be a difficult Mother's Day for me. For 16 years, I loved and cared for every need of my two sweet dogs. On October 28th of last year, my little Skipper passed away from renal failure. Just barely a month ago, April 30th, my baby Max, passed away from heart failure. They were my children and the loss of both within 6 months has been very difficult to process. The house is so quiet without the noise of their nails clicking on the hardwood floors. There aren't two little beggars sitting at my feet waiting for scraps from making my husband's lunch in the morning. When I go to bed at night, there is only my teeth to brush. Although I was not a mother in the sense that most people recognize, I was a mother to them. Motherhood takes on different forms and mine took the shape of loving and caring for two precious animals.
My favourite mother’s day surprise has not yet come about, but I will, in any case, go ahead and describe it.
ReplyDeleteMy beloved baby, featuring a dominant boer-bull-note, softer touches of mastiff, and a hint of ridgeback, nevertheless takes after his adopted mother in many important ways.
He has a preference for sweet food which he is, mostly, not allowed, and an undying adoration of nuts. Since many regard his mother as a special kind of nut, herself, this is probably a good thing.
Aside from similar food preferences, we also share an uncanny sniffing compulsion. While mother smells every scent possible at the mall, and further supplements these offerings with an endless array of samples, Rufus transforms every walk into an olfactory journey.
Every bush, tree and lamppost is subject to the same exacting interrogation. Mother, holding desperately to the end of the leash, is yanked about every which way so that Rufous may conduct these inspections in an at least minimally satisfying manner.
On the best mother’s day, ever, the two of us will be coming out of the gate. The postman will cycle past, but Rufous will be too refined to lunge at his bicycle; he will be so above the taunting of the neighbor-hood cats that he will ignore them completely; he will have realized that attacking cars is at best futile and at worst fatal. In short, Rufous will stride elegantly at my side, impressing everyone with his impeccable behavior.
And if, just once, he should dart into the bushes, it will not be to examine a three day old turd, but rather to show me something, left behind by the gods - a half buried bottle, of Shalimar.
My favourite has been finding the perfect perfume to gift my mother last year. I bought her a rollerball of Kat Von D's Sinner, and she loves its sultry, sweet, sexy scent. Thanks for the giveaway!

ReplyDeleteIt happened in Hawaii on the island of Maui at the Marriott on Mother's Day. I saw the Clare my father fell in love with - my mother before she became a mother. She was frolicking in the waves like a giddy schoolgirl. Pina Colada in hand, little umbrella, pierced pineapple askew on her glass. She looked beautiful, young and happy. No trace of the hard life and sadness she had endured. And as I watched her at that moment, I had an experience of an experience of my mother that I had never, ever saw or felt before. I saw my mother's joy for the very first timeI I felt her unbridled, devil-may-care, laughter-filled, joyous joy. What a great Mother's Day gift my mother gave me on that special Mother's Day.
ReplyDeleteMy story isn't exactly a traditional Mother's Day story, but it is about the day my wife became a mother. Our son's due date was December 4. First babies never come on the exact due date, and that was fine with me. I had been up late all week long and I decided I needed one last good night's sleep to get ready for the sleep-deprived world of parenthood.
ReplyDeleteDecember 3, we were having dinner with some friends. They served a delicious salad with a balsamic vinegar dressing. A rumor around town said that lots of pregnant women were going to a restaurant that used the same salad dressing, and they gave birth the next day. We all laughed about how silly that was and enjoyed our meal.
On the ride home, my eyes felt so heavy that I couldn't wait to hit the pillow and get that last peaceful night's sleep. Halfway home, my wife started to feel very uncomfortable. A couple of hours later her water broke. And many hours later our son was born. There was no sleep for any of us until 2:22pm the next day.
Our son's arrival on his actual due date was a total surprise for the both of us. My wife has been an incredible, brave, inspiring and loving mother to our son for the last twenty four years...as for me, I'm still trying to catch up on that last night's sleep.
