Alexander McQueen: 1969-2010

WhokilledBambie had mentioned something like: "Death and taxes are certain, but death isn't an annual event". The news is sad indeed this year, as Alexander McQueen, one of the pre-eminent avant-garde fashion designers of the 90s and 00s just died... following his muse Isabella Blow to the grave.
"British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has been found dead after taking his own life. The 40-year-old committed suicide just three years after his close friend, Isabella Blow - who plucked him from obscurity and helped him become a star - killed herself. A source at McQueen’s office this afternoon confirmed his death, saying: ‘It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.’"

Let's proclaim this a Kingdom day in his honour!

  1. Gah.

I would so love to make this Kingdom day, except I don't have Kingdom no more, and I loved the darn thing to pieces, snippy remarks it elicited notwithstanding. That perfume was really something else.

What a terrible loss. His designs are so beautiful, especially in the way they seem to wrap and worship the body. I miss the suits and dresses he will never design. I wish him peace.

  3. Oops. Now I gotta get Kindom, too. And maybe those crazy shoes from the last collection.

maybe more close to the heart (than isabella blow) - just days after his mother died.

suicide never makes sense to anyone left behind. wonder if it does to those who do it.

and so many creative ones take that road out of here. remember theresa duncan and her beau?

such loss and such tragedy. so sad.

helg, i did wear kingdom today. i've always liked it, but i forget to wear it. it doesn't do any b.o. nasty thing on me, though. it's quite tame. interesting, but tame. it reminds me of really well-done man's cologne, and of eau d'hermes and femme. i plan to wear it more. plus, i love that bottle. it looks like an alien robot and a heart.

  7. Six,

    so nice to see you!

Yeah, Kingdom was something else to be sure! Great scent really.
I bet it will become a rare collectible now, and what a pity that people will milk it for all it's worth....

  8. N,

kind thoughts...I thought he was truly gifted, the designs were super-imaginative, but the little I saw had excellent craftmanship too!

  9. L,

you'll have to do it quickly, before vultures exploit the post mortem frenzy.

  10. Minette,

your words sound particularly poignant, I feel like you have touched a delicate point which might be hiding behind the facade...We'll never know I guess.
I didn't know about his mother, learned about it after writing this post. It's certainly a devastating thing losing one's mother. If only...

I do recall TD and her beau. That was a complete loss of talent too!

    I hope he does rest...

  12. Minette,

I forgot to mention that your comparing Kingdom to Eau d'Hermes and (re-issued) Femme is spot-on! There are elements of both in there. The cumin, for one. :-)
    (how I love cumin)

  15. I'll never forget the years i wore it as a signature. Cumin-rose. Burning autumn leaves and maple. "Pierce my heart again". And never forget the "hooker eatin' a burrito"-comment.. it gave me giggles for months. Actually a nice&naughty southern belle de nuit that must have been... Love this scent. RIP, a rare genius, he was. And the good always die young, as we know.

  16. I was actually quite upset and I didn't know him at all- it is just such a waste. Also a timely reminder that money and success don't make you happy and that artists are very fragile indeed, whether they are successful or not. I watched a single man about loss last night and I thought of him actually.
