Thanksgiving & a Special Giveaway

In this season of giving thanks, I cannot imagine how my life would be without the love that surrounds and emits from my loved ones, the pool of health and creativity, and the circle of like-minded people, my readers, who have come to support me and encourage me so much in what has become a second career. For all that I am deeply grateful every day.

So to all of you reading I am wishing the most lovely Thanksgiving celebration imaginable, surrounded by smiling faces and contended hearts, and as a token of appreciation I am giving away a vintage bottle of Chanel No.5 cologne to one lucky individual. The bottle comes from my own personal collection and has been preserved with tender loving care through the years alongside its sisters. It will be the perfect opportunity for a collector to complete their lineup or for a neophyte to come to know one of the iconic scents of yore which are slowly but surely displaced from the throne due to reformulations. All you have to do is enter a comment if you wish to participate! (The draw is open till Sunday 29th November midnight)

My most memorable Thanksgiving was in
Paris. My husband and his French partners forgot to make reservations for an American dinner for me as promised--so we ate turkey at a Mexican restaurant on the Left Bank. I was wearing Chanel No. 5 while picking the quills out of the drumstick.

Happy, happy Thanksgiving E. Thank YOU for acknowledging it, even from afar. Personally, I think a day honoring gratitude and family should be an international holiday. It transcends religions, cultures, and boundaries to unite us in the best of our humanity.

    Hugs,
    Donna
    P. S. Sorry for being absent - this is a killer time of year for me at work so haven't spent much time with perfume. :-(

    P. P. S. Please give my place in the draw to someone who would love your very generous gift of vintage #5 more than I. Chanels just miss for me, although I recently discovered (and love!) the beauty that is Cuir de Russie.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone who celebrates, from another in foreign lands who doesn't, although as my profession involves the US and Americans, I sometimes feel as if I should.

Thank you, dear E, for keeping us all so entertained and educated with your marvellous writing! It's a privilege to count you as a friend.

And, no need to include me in the draw, thank you, but what a very kind person you are to do this.

  7. I grew up in Brazil, where we didn't celebrate Thanksgiving Day, and now live in the US, where we do. I'm still somewhere between, enjoying the feast but not quite joining in fully. I've always been puzzled at the general expressions of gratitude... directed to whom?

Anyway, you've given me a reason to be grateful to you, and hopeful that I'll finally get to smell some vintage No. 5. I hope I win!

Living in the UK now instead of the US (my homeland) Thanksgiving is one of the things that I miss.
I'm thankful for your fabulous Blog as well ... whether it's science, poetry or just reasoned words, reading along is a joy.

Although we are English and live in the UK, we like to take a little part in our friends' Thanksgiving, and I am making a pumpkin pie with pecans and bourbon! But the alcoholic spirit isn't the only thing we love - the spirit of the holiday is really wonderful and perhaps makes us think a little about what we should be thankful for (at least for a day, and before the mad Christmas splurge). And thanks to you for sharing your thoughts with us. And of course I should be thankful if I did happen to win your precious offering!

  20. Here in Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, but I'm thankful anyway, because it's still autumn (my favourite season) and because my nose works (so I can enjoy all the nice scents) and because Jim (who had to have an emergency cholecystectomy last weekend) came through with flying colours. So that's a lot to be thankful for.

  22. Happy Thanksgiving! One thing on my 'to be thankful list' this year is this perfume blog. Thank you for turning me onto the olfactory arts and being a knowledgeable guide through my amateur first year. I have enjoyed you so much!

And since I haven't even tried Chanel No. 5 yet, I'd love to be included in your draw.

It is something we do not do here in Australia either.

Helg - please overlook me in the drawing of the chanel No . 5 for I am not a true fan and I think she should go to a No. 5 lover. :)

I would like to be entered. Thanks for your warm generosity! This is going to go down as a Thanksgiving only memorable for its lack of activity and lack of a celebration. I've been home, staying with my sick kitty instead of visiting my family! They understand. (You gotta do what you gotta do.) Best,

  28. Thank you, dear E, for reminding us that gratitude for what we have is a most life-affirming goal. And thank you for the consistent excellence of your blog. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

No need to enter me in the draw, as I own a glorious bottle of vintage No. 5 parfum. (I confess to also owning a decent, but not-so-glorious, bottle. eBay is an iffy proposition, but sometimes it works out.) :)

  32. I'm in the UK, so Thanksgiving isn't a holiday we celebrate here, but it seems a really lovely idea to have a day for counting blessings and looking at the good things in life. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Please may I be entered in the draw?

  33. Oh Hi ! I have been lusting after the vintage no. 5 cologne of late.
I wore it about 28-30 years ago when I worked as a nurse or when I had job interviews for a pharmaceutical rep. I did get the job! But I contribute my serenity and poise during the interviews partially to the Chanel No. 5 cologne. It was spectacular ! I miss it today. I prefer the parfum version. Now if Chanel would only combine t he EDT with the Eau Premiere - we might have our old cologne version back. I miss it .
Please enter me in the draw ! I thank you fir your kindness and generosity.

  34. Oh I have never smelled the vintage stuff. As you know I am not a big fan of the current scent- I know that's scent sacrilige but I try and try- so perhaps the bottle would be wasted on me.

Happy thanksgiving to everyone though and I think you are extremely generous to give away such treasure E

Thanksgiving can be such a mass-marketed mess, but it usually sinks in for me: stop and think. Most of us have quite a lot for which to be thankful. Thank you for acknowledging this.

Would love to be included in the draw. My mother would love this. As long as he lived, my father made sure she had a bottle of Chanel No. 5, his longtime favorite.

  60. Thank you everyone for the pains you took to leave a comment and express your thoughts. I am touched that so many of you have expressed pleasure, enjoyement and camaraderies on Perfume Shrine, it is truly touching and I am honoured to count you among my readers.
Indeed the Thanksgiving holiday ~although not international and I'm not celebrating like some of you either~ is a lovely concept, non-commercialised as of yet and therefore worthy of embracing: a time of contemplation, but also a time to appreciate the best life gives and ascertaining that we're grateful for the things we usually take for granted. :-)

I have received all your replies, found it ever so moving that some of you have deep, personal memories with this scent and entered you all in the draw, which is now closed...
The winner shall be announced shortly in time to have this out in the mail before the holiday mad rush!
