Is this the end of Ebay perfume sales?

"On Monday, June 30, eBay was ordered to pay a record fine. The on-line auction site will have to pay almost €40 million ($60 million) in damages to 6 brands in the LVMH luxury group – Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior Couture – and 4 fragrance brands: Christian Dior, Kenzo, Givenchy and Guerlain, for violating their excusive distribution network".
You can read the rest of the ominous Osmoz article as well as the concerned testimonies of perfumephiles using Ebay on Perfume of Life forum by clicking the links.
So not good!

  1. As far as I know, this only applies to France for the moment. The Osmoz article doesn't make that clear. (Emoticon sweating abundantly).

  2. Yes, I lknow, this is why I called it "ominous"....notice they mention the decanters too, after whom the brands have not got after "yet"!
    *another sweating emoticon there*

  3. I've already had problems buying perfume online from the US as it now seems anything with an atomiser or (?) containing alcohol (?) is prohibitively expensive and/or just not available for overseas sales. There's always Libertys perfume hall, home of all that is obscure and fabulous, but it's restricted my access to things like Demeter...

Oh this is bad, it can continue with cosmetics and other things and we can end up only with one possibility - expensive things in the shops. I hope it won't happen.

  5. lucyfishwife: lots of US sellers don't ship to Europe, but some of them still do. It's much, much harder to *ship* fragrances to the US, as the USPS have pretty much the licence to do what they want with foreign parcels.

  6. LFW,

I can feel your pain: not to mention that shipping is prohibitive. It's very hard to send things to the US as well, the hysteria of the PO about possible terrorist attacks and the restrictions on substances allowed to be sent (perfume is a no no for some reason) makes it frustrating.

  8. D,

exactly, which makes telling lies and fervently praying customs don't toss the packages the course to follow: so not nice...
