Belated Easter Greetings, E! I had a week's holiday last year on Kalymnos (hope I have spelled it correctly). We were told of the extreme firework celebrations which take place there at Easter. It sounded alot of fun to watch from a safe distance! Nicola

they're cute, aren't they? Although a total mystery to me why they have been associated with Easter :O

  10. Dear Nicola,

    thanks a lot!
Kalymnos (you spelled it fine!) is perhaps the most famous place of the nymerous islands who celebrate in such a noisy and colourful fashion: they make the "saeetes" which are quite dangerous to make and fire, you know. Every year there are accidents by amateurs....
The spectacle is indeed amazingly impressive though!
(it has a pagan root ~in that loud noise dispels evil spirits~ and a historical one as well ~in that it recalls the dynamite preparing for the National Revolution) ;-)

The bunnies are extremely fertile, and Easter was replacing an original fertility celebration, therefore the bunnies as Easter symbols? :)

  12. A joyous Pascha from an Orthodox Christian in the midwestern USA! Christos Anesti!! Unfortunately, no fireworks over here ... that sounds like great fun!
